As many of you know, I am the parent of an 11 year old. She is absolutely the love of my love. But she is also my greatest challenge. Parenting is hard work. It challenges your creativity, because no consequence works the same on a day to day basis. It asks you what you value most in life. It makes you so exhausted, you can't even see straight. But...it also makes your heart surge with joy when you hear your child's laugh. It makes you more proud than ever when you see your child accomplish something you know they have been working hard on. It makes you cry tears of happiness to see your child become the person you know they are inside!
Having said all of that, I have realized that the phrase, "It takes a village", is more true than we recognize. We are raising digital natives. You may say, "Yes, Mrs. Donaldson. We know that." But, stop and think about what that means. The internet was created in 1983. For many of us, that means most of our childhood, and even into our teenage years, our "native" mode of playing was board games, going outside, riding our bikes, etc. Our kids, however, originated in the day and age of technology. They know the internet inside and out. We need to catch up!
Common Sense Media, an amazing organization for parents, teachers and kids, has all kinds of information about navigating the world wide web. You can subscribe to their website and they will send you emails about movies, games, and apps that is so enlightening. Recently, they discussed the app, TikTok. I urge you, read this article:
